International Youth Festival to Be Held in Yekaterinburg on September 11–17, 2026

On January 27, the first meeting of the Organizing Committee for the preparation and holding of the International Youth Festival 2026 (IYF-2026) took place in Moscow. By decree of President Vladimir Putin, the large-scale international youth event will be held in Yekaterinburg in September 2026.

“The International Youth Festival will take place this year in Yekaterinburg and will bring together 10,000 young people from 190 countries around the world. A key innovation of the festival will be the sector-based formation of international delegations: the festival will welcome leading representatives of the creative industries, public administration, science and technology, sports, entrepreneurship, media, and the social sector — those who are already shaping the future of their countries and the world as a whole. That is why it is critically important for the festival to serve as a showcase of Russia’s best projects and practices,” said Sergey Kiriyenko, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the International Youth Festival and First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office.

Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Organizing Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko emphasized that hosting IYF-2026 is a major responsibility, given the high standards set by the 2024 festival held in Sirius.

“Since last year, the national project ‘Youth and Children’ has been underway. Its structure includes the federal project ‘Russia in the World’, which focuses on international youth cooperation and aims to promote a positive image of our country abroad. The International Youth Festival is among the initiatives implemented within this national project, and it is proposed that the festival be held from September 11 to 17, 2026,” he noted.

The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized that the festival’s regional program will take place across 30 regions of Russia. He instructed Rosmolodezh (the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs) and the Directorate of the World Youth Festival to explore the possibility of foreign guests visiting Abkhazia, and called on the heads of Russia’s constituent entities to actively participate in forming regional delegations and event programs.

Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that the festival will bring together 5,000 Russian and 5,000 international participants, including 1,000 children aged 14 to 17. A total of 2,000 volunteers will assist in organizing and delivering the event.

“Drawing inspiration from the successful experience of the 2024 World Youth Festival in Sirius, we are developing the concept of the World Youth City. Not only at the main festival venue, but throughout Yekaterinburg, there will be educational programs, cultural events, concerts, and festivals, creating an immersive atmosphere of creativity, idea exchange, and international cooperation,” said Grigory Gurov, Head of Rosmolodezh.

Dmitry Chernyshenko proposed designating Ural Federal University as the primary accommodation site for participants and volunteers, and the Yekaterinburg-Expo International Exhibition Center as the main venue for the festival’s core program.

“One of the flagship initiatives approved by President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin within the higher education system is the construction of modern student campuses. It is precisely the new campus of Ural Federal University that will host the participants of the International Youth Festival. I am confident that both Russian and international students will highly appreciate the campus’s opportunities and spend their time there productively,” said Valery Falkov, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Denis Pasler noted that hosting IYF-2026 in the Sverdlovsk Region confirms the region’s status as a national center for youth development.

India Proposes Enhancing BRICS Cooperation in Education

India’s Prime Minister has proposed strengthening BRICS cooperation in the fields of education, skills development, and technology. Speaking at the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that BRICS countries could expand collaboration in these areas by drawing on India’s experience in developing various technological platforms.

“My second proposal concerns cooperation in education, skills development, and technology. To transform BRICS into a future-ready organization, we must prepare our societies for the future. Technology will play a crucial role in this process,” Modi said.

He recalled that the Indian authorities have implemented a number of platforms, including an artificial intelligence–based digital knowledge-sharing platform, a language platform designed to eliminate language barriers, as well as a COVID-19 vaccination platform.

“Diversity is one of India’s greatest strengths. Any solution developed in India has been tested against this diversity, and therefore such solutions can be easily implemented in any part of the world. In this regard, we would be pleased to share with our BRICS partners all of these platforms developed in India,” Modi noted.

Russia and India Cooperate on BRICS Projects and Exchange Scientific Personnel

Russia and India implement joint projects in science and technology both bilaterally and within the framework of BRICS. Cooperation between the two countries is guided by the Roadmap for Russia–India Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation, signed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Government of the Republic of India in December 2021 during the Russia–India Summit.

Under the Roadmap, Russia and India conduct joint research in such areas as agriculture, physics and astrophysics, quantum science, shipbuilding, healthcare, and medical technologies, among others. One of the most promising areas of cooperation is the so-called “blue economy,” which encompasses the development of innovative approaches to managing and utilizing available resources in order to prevent environmental challenges and address climate change.

Cooperation between Russia and India within BRICS is also aimed at advancing research in materials science and nanotechnology. To this end, the BRICS Network Center has been established under the joint leadership of the Russian and Indian sides. In addition, scientists from both countries are working together within the BRICS Virtual Institute for Photonics.

In March of this year, a call for grant applications was launched under the BRICS Framework Programme for Research in Science, Technology, and Innovation. The call covers the following thematic areas: deep sky surveys; antimicrobial resistance; modeling and analysis of big data for advanced precision medicine and public healthcare systems; high-performance computing systems; and innovation and entrepreneurship in photonics, nanophotonics, and metamaterials to address challenges in biomedicine, agriculture, the food industry, and energy, among others.

Beyond this, research institutes and universities in both countries conclude bilateral cooperation agreements, including those focused on academic mobility programs. Active exchanges of scientific personnel take place between the Indian National Science Academy and the Russian Academy of Sciences, while technology transfer is carried out through the Russia–India Science and Technology Center, which has branches in Moscow and New Delhi.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) of Russia cooperates with 17 Indian research organizations and universities. Scientists from both countries conduct joint research in nuclear and particle physics, condensed matter physics, and theoretical physics.

Cooperation between Russia and India is also expanding in the field of higher education. In recent years, Indian citizens have increasingly chosen Russian universities. Currently, 16,700 citizens of the Republic of India are enrolled in higher education programs at Russian universities, including their overseas branches. Three years ago, the number of Indian students stood at 14,300.

As a result of the 2021/22 admissions campaign, 112 Indian citizens were admitted to Russian universities under the quota of the Government of the Russian Federation. Most of them chose specialist and master’s degree programs. The most popular fields of study among Indian applicants were general medicine and philology.

For example, 27 Indian students are enrolled at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU), including 23 master’s students. Most of them chose programs in information technology, materials science, mechanical engineering and energy, mathematics, economics, management, and the humanities. Many Indian students actively participate in SPbPU student projects. For instance, Kritisha Panda is taking part in the SPbPU International Student Project Marathon and is working on a project focused on research into next-generation mobile communication technologies, including 5G and 6G. During her work, she developed spectrally efficient signal waveforms that minimize interference with communication systems operating in adjacent frequency bands and presented her findings at the “Science Week of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications of SPbPU” conference.

Among the universities popular with Indian students is also the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University). According to Rector Oleg Yastrebov, 126 Indian students are currently studying at RUDN University, with 45% of them funded through state-supported places. The majority of Indian students at RUDN University are enrolled in the Medical Institute, specializing in General Medicine.
